Something which we do a lot which most people don’t understand at all is fibre leased line projects.

Just to be clear, this is where a customer requires a very fast, private internet connection, installed purely for their use.

This is not to be confused with ‘Fibre Broadband’ or FTTP (Fibre to The Premises) which is the consumer roll out of fibre being undertaken throughout the country.

Far from it – this is a special private project for a single site. In some cases, fibre may already be present in the premises which makes it much faster, cheaper and easier.

However, is certain cases, there is no fibre at all which mean we have to organise surveys with Openreach and ascertain the costs to install the fibre, known as Excess Construction Charges (ECC’S).

Fortunately, Openreach subsidise the first £ 2,800 worth of costs. So in around 80% of cases, the customer pays nothing extra.

We often have several of these in flight at any one time.

One survey came back yesterday. This is for a private residence. They are having a 1,000Mbps (Gigabit) connection installed in their house and they will then have some local internal fibre run in to the nearby dwellings so they can share the connection with their neighbours.

In this case, the extra costs were as follows:

Survey £312.60

Provision of small footway box £ 940.82

Solid Fibre Cable 575 metres @ £6.69 totalling £ 3846.75

Total cost £ 5100.07, less subsidy of £ 2,800 – remaining cost to the customer£ 2300.17

We have been doing these types of projects for over 20 years.

In this case, the customer will also pay their monthly rental cost which is normally around £ 300-£350 per month plus VAT.

This will be a wires only connection so the customer will also need a router, media convertor and install and configuration of those devices.
